Young neighbors in Kien Svay try out OLPC computers

Young children seem to be fast studies on the OLPC laptops
More neighbor children have been over to try out the XO laptops. The older ones ask about the Internet, but so far the computers talk only to one another!
The children spend hours photographing one another and themselves with the laptop cameras. I think I will try to figure out how to transfer the photos to my computer and set up an online photo gallery. (I’m learning too!)
So far, we are inviting neighbors over to the house. The idea of a “drop in center” will evolve, I think. In Cambodia, people are not casual about sending their children off to the home of a stranger, so for now, we will invite children we know, talk to more parents and let the project get established over time.
cool photos, Michele!

Interesting to find out the specific barriers you are having in implementing the program in a different culture. Let’s hope that Cambodians can either learn something from the “drop in center” or take it and apply it in another way that fits their culture, in the long run.

hi,
What are you going to do today? Do you see animals?
Can you swim?

Hi Rajana. Great questions! I am responding for Poline and Kusal, a boy and girl who have been using the XO laptops. They do not have Internet so I got their answers.
This is a farming village called Phum Thum so the animals we see here are cows and chickens. Our family also has a dog and six geese. The geese squawk when people come here so they are like watch dogs.
We live right on the Mekong River and we know how to swim. But mostly we like to row a small boat on the river. In this village, many people do not have bathrooms like Americans do so they take their bath and do their laundry in the river too.
Thanks for writing! How about you. Can you swim? Do you like swimming? What is your favorite game on the XO”
